Commentary: The number of employees in the furniture manufacturing sector has declined almost 40% over the past 10 years from 9,030 in 2005 to 5,500 in 2015. The number of furniture manufacturing companies has also declined over the same period but only by 23% indicating many companies have downsized possibly due to strategic moves into custom make/bespoke work, the increasing use of automated production (CAD CAM) and the adoption of competitive manufacturing. The average number of employees per company is 3.8.
